The Bell Center was once again the theater of a great moment in music as Metallica were in town not for only one, but two concerts (only NYC, Quebec and Toronto got 2 concerts on this tour) As always, the show started with the classic Ecstacy of gold. All lights went out, with just lighters and the now way too popular cell phone to light the Bell Center. The first song was That Was Just Your Life, the first track on the new album. We couldn’t see the band for this song, we were left in the dark and their was a great laser show to keep us entertained. The effects were really well done, we could almost believe for a moment that we were at a Pink Floyd concert instead.
We had to wait till the third song to get a classic song, and a great one at that, The Harvester Of Sorrow, and it sounded much better then the other times I’d heard it. We got a surprise after with Of Wolf and Man, a song that was written by Jason who’s no longer with the band. Then it was One with the explosion at the beginning as the intro, but they went low budget for that, it was a little disappointing, you can check the video and see for yourself. Broken, Beat and Scarred was next, it was followed by Cyanide for which I was really looking forward to the bass solo, and Rob nailed it! Time for Sad but True which got everyone back on their feet, and Unforgiven where the band gave everything they had, James even end the song on his knees. They followed with the new song The Judas kiss and then the song that sounded the best live The Day That Never Comes. Master of Puppets immediately followed, but they were quick to return to the new stuff with My Apocalypse. Then they played Nothing Else Matters and finished with Enter Sandman before the encore. They played all classics for the encore with Blitzkrieg , then Trapped Under Ice and finally Seek and destroy. For Seek, they dropped about 100 blacks balloons with Metallica written on them from the roof, the effect was great but people in the crowd didn’t understand how it is suppose to work, they pushed it back on the stage instead of throwing it back into the crowd. The band even kicked the balls ball in the crowd, I couldn’t believe it.
The show was really great, but i have to say I left wanting more. I was expecting more pyro, a couple more stunts, way lot more old songs. Metallica generally delivers everytime with this kind of stuff, so i was a little surprised that they went so low profile on these elements. I was also surprised that they didn’t each have a solo, Cyanide was amazing because we finally got a nice Rob solo.
